Welcome back to the colony, travelers

If you followed my last journey, you know we started as a complete nobody in this harsh, dome-enclosed prison. But things are changing. Let us dive straight into the next chapter of our survival guide, complete with broken gears, swamp cultists, calculated betrayals, and the sweet taste of hard-earned revenge.

Descending into the Shadows: The Old Mine

Our journey resumes deep within the dark, suffocating shafts of the Old Mine. The air is thick with dust and the constant, rhythmic clanging of pickaxes. Right at the entrance, the Templars of the Brotherhood halt us, their faces grim under their heavy armor. They warn us of the Minecrawlers, massive, chitin-armored beasts nesting in the unmapped deeper shafts.

But we have a plan, and more importantly, we have a bow. Stepping into the dark, we draw the string, kiting the beasts with quick, agile steps. With the Templars holding the front line, we share the experience of the hunt, but several of the crawlers fall directly to our arrows. Among the skeletal remains in the lower shafts, we uncover a valuable prize, a Ring of Flame Protection, which is a neat little defensive buff for the trials ahead.

Gears and Small Victories

Deep in a side tunnel, we put our pickaxe to work, chipping away at the glowing blue ore veins. Nearby, we locate the rusted gear that Alef mentioned, a crucial piece of machinery for the mine’s main lift. Just a few steps away, hidden in the rubble, lies a Potion of Dexterity. We decide to pocket this precious liquid, saving it for later to push our agility stats beyond the natural training limits.

Clearing the Shafts and Making a Profit

We push deeper, cleansing the pitch-black tunnels of more crawler infestations. On the body of a fallen guard, we find a Ring of Agility, granting us a sweet plus five boost to our dexterity. Not far away, we loot a heavy Steel Mace, boasting a solid thirty-six damage.

During a quick chat with the local smelter, we learn why only a fraction of the mined ore is being processed. To free up inventory space and fill our pockets, we sell our excess weapons to the merchant Alberto, securing a heavy sack of raw ore. Before leaving, we spend a few more minutes at a quiet ore vein, enjoying the soothing rhythm of mining.

Returning to the Light

Leaving the damp shafts behind, we step back into the blinding sun of the colony and trek back to the Old Camp. After a much-needed, long sleep in a cozy cabin, we head straight to the marketplace. There, we restock our quiver with fresh arrows from the merchants Dexter and Fisk, prepping for the next big phase of our journey.

Journey to the Swamp

At the market square, we cross paths with Baal Parvez, a novice of the Brotherhood. He speaks passionately of the Sleeper, the promised liberation, and a massive ritual being prepared deep in the swamp. Intrigued, we let him guide us through the wilderness. Parvez proves to be an absolute powerhouse of a companion, effortlessly slicing through bloodflies, wolves, scavengers, and lizards along the way, feeding us a massive wave of passive experience points.

Arriving at the Brotherhood

At the gates of the Swamp Camp, the guards greet us with a stern warning: do not dare to speak directly to the Gurus. Fortunately, we meet Lester, a friendly novice who explains the camp’s hierarchy, which is divided into spiritual Gurus, elite Templars, and hardworking novices. He kindly guides us through the wooden platforms to the smoking alchemy lab of Cor Kalom.

Kalom and the Stubborn Master

Inside, we chat with Kalom’s assistant, Cain, who whispers that his master's secret recipes are locked away in a nearby chest. When we try to speak to Cor Kalom himself, the arrogant alchemist brushes us off, stating he will only acknowledge us once the other Baals deem us worthy.

Resolving the Herb-Pounder Conflict

After a quick sleep in an empty novice bed, we encounter Ghorim, a novice completely exhausted from pounding swamp weed all night. He begs us to find his replacement, Harlok. We track down the lazy slacker, and after a brief, educational fistfight, Harlok finds his work ethic and heads straight to the weed-pounding station.

Impressing the Gurus

To gain Kalom's attention, we must win over the camp's spiritual leaders:

  • Baal Tondral: We listen to his intense, soul-stirring sermon. He challenges us to prove our loyalty by recruiting a new soul from the Old Camp to join the Brotherhood.
  • Baal Cadar: A young novice named Joru gives us a hot tip, explaining that Cadar can only be impressed by a display of magic. In exchange for our daily swamp weed ration from Fortuno, Joru also reveals the secrets to catching the attention of the other Gurus.
  • Baal Namib: Lester helps us orchestrate a clever trick. Standing right next to the Guru, we stage a conversation with Lester, pretending to have had a vision of the Sleeper and loudly renouncing the old gods. Namib is deeply touched, declaring us a "true believer" and sending us to Cor Kalom with his blessing.
  • Baal Orun: Having helped Ghorim, Baal Orun rewards our initiative by tasking us with collecting the daily weed harvest from the swamp gatherers.
  • Baal Isidro: We hand Baal Namib an extremely potent strain of weed called "Black Wise". After taking a hit, the Guru falls into a vivid vision about us and immediately sends us to see Cor Kalom.

Before moving on, we meet the novice Talas sitting at his favorite spot. He offers to teach us the acrobatics of climbing, though he demands half a dozen stalks of Black Wise as payment.

A Swift Hunt and a New Companion

The humid, heavy air of the swamp hits us as we set out again, but this time, we are no longer the fragile newcomer. Armed with the Master rank in archery, which we proudly acquired from Wolf, the wilderness feels like a playground. Drawing our bow in rapid succession, we pick off bloodflies in the thickets with terrifying precision.

The highlight of the day, however, is retrieving our promised mount, a domesticated scavenger we lovingly name "Feini". He is adorably goofy and a absolute speed machine. By jumping in a rhythmic pattern while running, Feini glides over the hills, evoking fond memories of the legendary, glitched acrobatic jumps from the original classic game. We just have to keep him away from crowded spaces and dark caves, as the poor little guy is easily startled.

Culinary Discoveries and Political Moves

Before diving back into the mud, we make a quick culinary stop. Delivering our gathered ingredients, we learn the secret recipe to Brock’s Stew, a massive saver for our budget, healing us much better than costly potions. Later, while looting the treehouse of Baal Netbeck, a completely delusional Guru who believes the forest flowers sing to him, we find the recipe for the legendary Dragonfire Stew.

But we are here for more than just cooking. The political chess game in the colony is heating up. Lares has cleverly forged the Old Mine’s supply list with luxury goods, and we managed to slip it right under Diego’s nose. Having also beaten up Lefty to remind him of his new role as waterboy, our reputation among the bandits is skyrocketing. While we are technically supposed to bring the swamp weed harvest to Cor Kalom, the gatherers whisper a better deal: Cipher in the New Camp pays premium ore for the green gold, and we can smell the profit.

Boundaries and Ocean Views

Curiosity getting the better of us, we decide to run a quick, fatal test on the magical barrier. Saving our progress, we run straight into the blue crackle, getting instantly vaporized. Science confirmed, we reload and follow a charming hermit named Schrat, who is fed up with the camp's religious fanaticism.

At a hidden cliffside beach, we finally learn how to climb. Scrambling up a steep rock wall, we enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view of the sea, holding a newly found Wind Fist spell tightly in our pockets. It is the perfect moment to plan our next moves: cracking Dexter’s chest, selling the weed to Cipher, and officially joining the New Camp.

Smuggling Recipes and Swamp Shark Deals

Refreshed by the ocean breeze, we head back into the Swamp Camp. After picking up our daily ration from Fortuno, we slip unnoticed into Cor Kalom's laboratory, completely ignored by the guard, and snatch the highly encrypted recipe Dexter asked for.

Mounting Feini, we speed back through the valley. Near his cabin, we meet Cavalorn, a hunter who has acquired a book about Swampsharks. He offers us a lucrative deal: if we bring him the skin and teeth of one of these beasts, he will pay us two hundred and fifty ore and teach us skinning tricks. To prepare, we make a quick stop at the New Camp and spend our hard-earned learning points with Buster to master skinning reptiles.

Becoming the Richest Outcast

We meet Cipher in the local tavern. He is absolutely thrilled with the stolen swamp weed and happily counts out six hundred ore. We sell the remaining stalks individually to thirsty mercenaries for ten ore apiece, leaving us with nearly eight hundred ore. Feeling like royalty, we immediately invest a portion of our wealth into a practical Healing Rune.

Returning to the Old Camp, we deliver the forged supply list to Diego and pass along Lares’ regards. Dexter is equally delighted when we hand over Kalom’s stolen recipe. Having won the trust of every influential Shadow, Thorus finally gives us the green light: we are allowed inside the castle.

Secrets of the Castle and Retribution

Once inside, we deliver our sealed letter to the Fire Mages, choosing the Essence of Spirit potion as our reward, which permanently increases our maximum mana.

Inside the castle courtyard, we meet Sira, a desperate cook who is being constantly harassed and tormented by Bullet and his guards. Since Gomez no longer protects her, we promise her to take care of it.

We sleep until nightfall and slip back into the quiet castle. After a bit of lockpicking and exploring a hidden tower passage, we find Bullet stumbling drunkenly through the shadows. We follow him to a quiet corner where he stops to relieve himself. Confronting him, he immediately recognizes us as the rookie he beat up on our very first day in the colony. But the tables have turned. We draw our weapon, dodge his clumsy swings, and lay him flat on the ground.

Bullet is history. We loot his heavy gear, and Sira is overwhelmed with gratitude when we deliver the news. Eager to escape the Old Camp, she asks us to check if women are treated with respect in the Swamp Camp.

After a brief, terrifying encounter with a Swampshark that proves to be way too strong for our current spells, we make our final decision: we return to Lares. We have passed all his tests, outsmarted Isidro, beaten Lefty, and proven our absolute loyalty. Lares is highly impressed, but before he hands us our new armor, he has one last, highly specialized mission for us.

Planning the Raid

It is finally time to pick a side. Lares offers us a special, brand-new task: assisting in the ambush of Gomez’s ore convoy traveling from the Old Camp to the Old Mine. Since our forged supply list made the convoy much heavier and richer than usual, the loot will be legendary.

Lares sends us to Gorn to pick up a weapon for the raid. Gorn is a bit skeptical about the political fallout but lets us choose. We opt for a bow and receive a Field Bow. Finding it a bit weak, we visit Wolf, who buys our spare bows and stocks us up on plenty of arrows and bolts.

Springing the Trap

We head to the canyon road where Wetch, the leader of the raid, is waiting. On the way, we encounter a funny little glitch: a Lurker stuck spinning in a perfect, endless circle, like a tiny reptile galaxy.

Wetch explains the plan: the bandits have flooded the road with water, trapping the heavy ore cart in the deep mud. Since the guards do not know our face yet, we are the perfect bait. The golden rule: no casualties, as we want to avoid an all-out war with Gomez.

We approach the stressed guards, playing the innocent traveler, and suggest gathering thick tree branches from the nearby woods to lever the cart out. As the guards split up to search, the bandits strike from the brush. The ambush is a flawless success. The guards are knocked unconscious, we loot them thoroughly, and Wetch sends us back to camp with high praise.

Finally a Bandit

Lares is thrilled with our performance and officially welcomes us into the gang, presenting us with our very own Bandit Armor.

With our new status, we explore the camp’s new features:

  • Armor Upgrades: Wolf introduces us to the upgrade system. We spend our ore to significantly reinforce our chest plate.
  • The Water Mages' Messenger: Chronos hands us a messenger amulet, granting us passage into the Old Camp's castle. We are tasked with delivering an urgent letter to Coristo, the High Fire Mage, regarding the rising tensions. Having just raided their convoy, delivering this letter feels beautifully ironic.
  • Henno the Bowyer: We meet the hunter Henno. He offers to craft us a custom bow if we bring him the right wood. We can choose between flexible Willow or sturdy Oak. Lacking oak, we visit Fisk in the Old Camp to buy a solid piece of timber, securing a beautifully crafted Oak Bow.
  • Teaching the Rice Lord a Lesson: Before leaving, we use our bow to put the Rice Lord and his thugs in their place. Knocking him down, we claim his Ring of Life Force and his powerful staff.

Delivering the Mail

Using our new amulet, we pass the guards at the castle gate and hand Chronos’ letter to Milten, who promises to pass it to Coristo.

We also settle a culinary favor: Snape, the cook from the New Camp, wanted Sira’s famous stew recipe. Having saved her life earlier, Sira happily shares it. Snape asks us to find some rare ingredients like Moonleaf, promising to teach us the recipe in return.

A New Chapter Begins

With the transition to the second chapter, more dangerous beasts roam the land. Lares gives us our first official assignment as a bandit: track down Cor Kalom’s missing apprentice, Kane. Lares wants to weaken the swamp weed mixture, as his men are walking around like brainless zombies, and he needs them sharp.

Arriving in the Swamp, we find Cor Kalom furious over his assistant's disappearance. Inside Kane’s hut, we find a strange drawing depicting a ritual site. A novice identifies it as the abandoned, collapsed mine near the exchange square. Apparently, Kane went there after receiving a vision of the Sleeper.

On our way across the colony, we use our master archery skills to clear out newly spawned packs of wolves and bloodflies, gaining a sweet experience boost, and pay a quick visit to Gilbert in his high cliff hideout. We finally reach the entrance of the abandoned mine, where the guard Ori stands watch.

Bribing the Guard

To gain entry to the flooded, collapsed mine, we must bypass Ori. A small peace offering of Dreamcall swamp weed does the trick, and the guard happily lets us pass.

Diving into the Flooded Mine

For the first time, this abandoned mine is fully explorable. Alongside glowing Nebelkronen herbs, dangerous Minecrawlers lurk in the damp corners. Without proper diving skills, swimming through the submerged tunnels is a nail-biting race against our breath meter, but we manage to drag up a heavy chest filled with beer and a Morning Star mace.

Finding Kane

Deep in the mine, inside an ancient Orc tomb decorated with Sleeper symbols, we find the missing apprentice. Sadly, Kane did not survive his encounter with an undead Orc. We strike down the creature, loot the tomb, and retrieve a strange, magical amulet from Kane's body.

Soup, Stats, and Gear Upgrades

Back at the Old Camp, we deliver the gathered herbs to Snaff, who whips up his legendary soup. We turn around and sell the portions to Dexter for a tidy profit.

Next, we visit Diego to train our dexterity, then report our findings to Lares in the New Camp. Wolf uses our ore to upgrade our armor with sturdy leg guards and a reinforced belt.

Finally, Henno presents us with our custom Oak Bow. While it looks absolutely gorgeous, its base stats are slightly lower than our current longbow, which means we will need to look into some modifications very soon.

The Temple and the First Focus Stone

Returning to the Swamp Camp, we show Cor Kalom the retrieved amulet. He is ecstatic and sends us straight up the temple hill to see the high leader, Iberion. Thanks to a vision, Iberion was already expecting us. He tasks us with retrieving a Focus Stone needed for the upcoming mass invocation ritual.

We are guided by the novice Nyras. After a slight navigation hiccup near the wooden bridge, he leads us high up onto the cliffs overlooking the sea, where the glowing Focus Stone rests on a stone pedestal.

But as the stone comes within reach, the spiritual energy drives Nyras into a state of absolute madness. Claiming the glory of the ritual for himself, he attacks us in a magical frenzy. After a swift, grounding beatdown, he snaps out of his trance, clutching his head in pain and apologizing profusely. He urges us to take the Focus Stone and bring it safely to Iberion as fast as possible.
